Supply, installation and training of a calorimeter for fission products including maintenance.
The heat produced during the decay of long-lived fission products is of primary importance for the storage and final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. The uncertainty on this heat has a substantial economic and ecological impact for a safe storage or disposal of SNF. The decay of radionuclides of interest is dominated by beta decay and difficult to predict. To predict the heat one needs to account for the loss due to neutrino and gamma-ray emission. To determine the specific decay heat a combination of accurate radioactivity and heat measurements is required. Facilities for accurate radioactivity measurements are available at JRC but no calorimetric system is available. Therefore, a calorimeter tailored to measurements of the decay heat of radionuclides of interest for SNF characterisation is needed. The system will be used to determine the specific heat and to assess the heat that can be lost due to gamma-ray emission. The calorimeter shall determine the heat to the SI unit system.
